PLATINUM AND SADIE

Its hard to measure love
Love can be illusive

However, all who know Thelma, would totally agree that
her love measure for animals is completely off the scale, a
20 on a scale of 10. Her love for dogs, among all animals,
started when she was very young. The story’s of her love,
coddling of newborn kittens, playing with baby pups in a
baby carriage, walking them, are nothing short of a script for
the silver screen. In short, Thelma’s love for animals, stands
as equal to higher than high.
All these years forward, Thelma’s love is tested: Tragedy
strikes her love down, without mercy. Thelma suddenly
found herself violated, viciously. The shock must have been
unbearable for her.

HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED

In the summer of 2018, we had two adult dogs, Sadie, a
Black Labrador, and Platinum, a German Shepard. They were respectful, shared our home, offering their keen senses
of awareness, guarding our precious belongings. Thelma, pampered them, and one could easily see her caregiver attitude. By bedtime, they would run outside for a few minutes, then retire for the evening. The subject evening, found Platinum limping into the house after her exercise walking across the floor to her bed. She lay-ed down, and never walked again. We didn’t realize her injury. By morning, she did not get up as usual. She lifted her head, smiled as a Shepard does, but did not walk. We immediately found ourselves examining her, lifting here rear quarters, pushing her, easily, and taking serious notice-she could not get up.

Thelma was horrified. She called the local vet. They told
her to bring Platinum directly over. We rigged a blanket
stretcher, carried her to the car in the home made sling.
Arriving at the Vet, we worked with the assistants, loading
Platinum on a professional stretcher, and then all involved
carried her inside. I cannot explain in words, how Thelma
looked, and her facial expression as she bargained with the
universe for Platinum’s life. But, we had to put her down.
Thelma cried as I drove home, to a empty Platinum bed.

The death of Platinum was suddenly on Thelma’s, lips. Someone bludgeoned her rear quarters! The day wore on, then another and so on. Thelma was effected. However, Thelma turned her attention to Sadie, and continued her pampering and love for her. The following information and story comes directly from Thelma. She related to me many years ago, and relate often the following story.

Thelma related to me that when she was young living in
Bremerton Washington, she lived in an area where there
weren’t a lot of six-year-old girls to play with. So Thelma
decided to make animal little stories, and play issues.
Thelma had a baby buggy, and she would place in that
buggy, little cats and little dogs cover them up and try to roll
them down the road as they were little babies. She would
pet them, put blankets on them and use them as her play
mates. Thelma loved animals way back then as she loves
them today. Thelma related to me, that she pushed her
baby buggy sometimes one or two blocks turned around
and came back. She noted that, when another little older
child would ask Thelma if they could look at the little dog
puppy or cat puppy, Thelma would always say no and move
her buggy on down the road. Thelma was private with her
little animals, and she treating them with a great deal of
respect. That said, one day, Thelma found a mama kitty with
several little kittens. Thelma picked up the mama cat, and the little kittens and took them in the buggy all the way home. Thelma took them in the house, in would receive permosion to have the cat and kitten in the house. Her mother stated
in, „As long as you keep them out of the way of your father,
we should have no problem.”
When Thelma would go to bed, she would try to sneak one
of the little kittens, in bed with her and her mother would
say, „Thelma, please put the kitten back.”, and Thelma would
say „Okay Mama”, and she would take the kitten back. And
she would pick up another kitten and take it back to bed. I
always found that to be very interesting and kind of funny,
because Thelma always wanted to have one of her little kittens with her.

As a few weeks tick on, her father finally discovered the mama
cat, and the little kittens in the house. He said to Thelma, and
her mother, „Thelma pick up the kittens, put them in a box,
we’re going to take them and get rid of them.” Thelma said,
but Daddy, I have homes for every kitten, and I’ve already
got them placed, and daddy I’d like to do that instead.
Thelma related, that her father was absolutely unrelentind,
in ordered her to put the little kittens in a box. He then told
Thelma, you take that box, down to the river and put the box
in all the kittens in the river and send them down the river.
Thelma was horrified obviously, and pleaded with her father,
that this was not common sense and the she had homes for
all the kittens. But her father, insisted and Thelma was forced
to set the cats adrift. This must have really hurt Thelma,
and I know that to be true, because she talks about even
today, and feel sad that it happened.
As the week stick by, Thelma had her buggy and play things
as a little girl would, and she came across some little puppies.

And a mother who had those puppies in a small den
She was excited to have a little puppies, and went home to
asked her mother if she could have one. Her mother sad,
„No, we should let the puppies stay with her mother and you
can just visit them.” Thelma said „Okay, mama, I will.” and
she started to visit the puppies and it mother dog each day.
In about three days, her father found out that the puppies
and mother dog were there nearby the house. He then proceeded,

to walk over to the location of the puppies, pull out
a gun and shot the mother dog, and then take a shovel and
fill the hole where the puppies were so that they would die
of starvation. Thelma was forced to watch this. In all my life,
as a man to this day I am horrified, that any parent would
ever do anything like that. That said it happened, and Thelma relate

to that terrible story even today. She said, „Craig,
it put a mark on me that I will never forget.”

Sadie was now left, after Platinum had passed away. Thelma
took care of Sadie as she always had Platinum and Sadie,
feeding her, grooming her, and checking her nails, and
doing her nails if necessary. Thelma was very much into maintaining Sadie as a healthy as possible, and a
vibrant animal. As the days passed after Platinum's demise,
Thelma began to come back to herself, and she moved away
Platinum’s bed and Sadie was there, as Thelma worked with
Sadie her memories of Platinum began to fade. I was glad to
see that, and supported Thelma however, I could. However,
one evening about a week and a half from that occurrence
with Platinum , that evening, Thelma let Sadie out to run for
her exercise before going to bed. As Thelma usually did when
Sadie came back in, she looked at Sadie and we both noticed
the Sadie was limping a little bit calmer similar to Platinum
had a week and a half or two weeks before however, Sadie
walked or smiled with her dog smile, and lay down on her
bed and begin to get ready for the evening.
Thelma and I got up the next morning, and went over to call
Sadie to put her outside, and she couldn’t get up. Knowing
what happened to Platinum, Thelma ran over to Sadie, and
immediately began to try to assist up the Sadie to get up.
That said, Sadie could not get up. I went over as I did with
Platinum to assist Thelma getting Sadie up. Sadie could not
get up.

We built a similar sling, loaded Sadie up, and took her
to the vet immediately. The vet personnel came out with
a professional stretcher, put Sadie on the stretcher, and
took her in to be examined. At the end of the exam, after
a consult with the vet, we had to put Sadie down. At this
point, Thelma was so shocked, that she couldn’t believe
what had happened. She suspended disbelief, and looked
at me, and cried as I took her home. I think that
her memory of her younger days, begin to haunt her and
mix with the situation that was at hand with Sadie.
I cannot believe, in all my worldly knowledge, any person
in this world, that would cause animals to have this type
of demise. As I see things, this was done on purpose, and
by someone or someones, that wanted this to happen. It is
almost unbelievable, what happened to Thelma after this
scenario.

As a final note on this chapter 2, we moved to get one Beagle, from the animal rescue, and brought Little
Queenie home. She was a wonderful little Beagle and we
began to work with her as a pup. It was soon after that
we rescued a second puppy, we called Sheba. Sheba and
Queenie, both Beagles, took up some of the hole that was left
in Thelma psyche by the loss of Platinum and Sadie. To this day, we work with Queenie and Sheba, and they sleep with us, and it’s a wonderful situation all around.
I cannot say that having Queenie, and Sheba fills the void of
Platinum and Sadie, but Thelma feels happy and satisfied to
take care of them, to nurse her them, is to treat them, as she did whith Platinum and Sadie.

As a final note,
this scenario is the worst-case of animal abuse
that I have personally
